Transforming cigarette butts into a sustainable material for the future
Discover Celion®
The world’s first high quality and pure cellulose acetate recovered from cigarette butts
It is a groundbreaking material that can be used in conventional plastic molding processes. Its production technology boasts a 36% lower carbon footprint compared to virgin cellulose acetate and is made without environmentally harmful additives
Tecnology
Through science and engineering, we developed a unique technology in the world to make cigarette butts a recyclable waste.
Our mechanical-chemical process, completely sustainable from its design, allows us to remove all the toxic substances contained in cigarette butts and recover the valuable cellulose acetate from which the filter is made. The recovered acetate is transformed into Celion®, a new sustainable raw material. Cigarette butts are waste with a high load of toxic components. Through our process, we ensure that these substances effectively leave the environment and are treated safely.
We’d love to hear your ideas and explore how we can collaborate to take your projects to the next level! Get in touch with us and discover the exciting possibilities that Celion® has to offer you.
Together, we can develop products that will make a difference towards a more sustainable future!
It is the plastic from which the cigarette filter is made. It is a highly versatile and valuable thermoplastic, with which even sunglasses frames are made. In the cigarette butts this material is contaminated, but our process recovers it completely clean.
What happens to these toxins?
Thousands of toxic compounds are trapped in cigarette butts. We are talking about nicotine, derivatives of tar, heavy metals, polycyclic aromatics, among others.
At IMEKO we are the first in the world to treat this waste as dangerous. We take care of sending them to specialized companies that treat hazardous waste, inerting it and permanently eliminating it from the environment.
We take recovered acetate and transform it into the most incredible raw material for the sustainable products industry
